Mar 20, 2008 The active ingredient of brand name Plaquenil and generic hydroxychloroquine are the same. In the United States, the manufacture of prescription drugs is highly regulated and the manufacturer is required, by federal law, to guarantee the integrity of their product, for both brand name and generic formulation. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is a drug that is classified as an anti-malarial drug. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment or prevention of malaria. It is also prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and the side effects of lupus such as hair loss, joint pain, and more. I have been on brand and generic Plaquenil for years and recently the mfg. changed to something I've never taken before but is suppose to be a generic Plaquenil. I've had some strange symptoms and now in a huge flare up for the past 10 days of starting it.

It is also used to treat acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis. Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus).

Re want to know good stuff about plaquenil Hi Aspen.answer to your question, I have been diagnosed PlaquenilName brand-Not the generic form twice in my life, about 15 yrs ago for Sjogren's Syndrome-for about a year & then again last year when I was diagnosed with Lupus. I have been taking brand name Plaquenil for nearly 2 years and it has done a great job keeping my RA under control, that is until last week. The druggest didn't have any brand name Plaquenil so substituted the generic, within several days I started having flare-up symptoms - stiffness, pain, exhaustion, etc etc. Plaquenil alone any brand is very slow acting so you may not have been on it long enough to really notice a difference. It usually takes at least 3 months to kick in. If you gave the generic 3 months or longer and didnt notice any differenc then you may want to try the name brand.
