If you are taking Plaquenil to treat an inflammatory condition or malaria, you should be aware of the side effects that may occur to your eyes and vision. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage. Plaquenil is the brand name of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to prevent or treat malaria. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. Like I have pressure on the top of my head. I nver had this before. Could this be a side effect of the Plaquenil and does it normaly go away after I take it for a while? Answer. That is an unusual side effect for Plaquenil. I would try stopping and restarting it to make sure Plaquenil is at fault.

Over the years on this site we have had quite a few people post that they didn't think that the plaquenil was working so they would stop taking it. I have done a lot of research on this drug and haven't run into anybody who has complained of the withdrawal effect.

Plaquenil is generally well-tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common side effects linked to Plaquenil include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. While side effects of corticosteroids are usually to blame, there is also the possibility of ocular damage associated with long-term use of the antimalarial drugs hydroxychloroquine brand name Plaquenil® and chloroquine. Improved vision screening tests and updated dosing guidelines are key to avoiding such complications. Saturday was a week since I stopped taking Plaquenil, aka Hydroxychloroquine, per my doctor's instructions, and I think I am going through some form of withdrawal. I took the drug as a treatment for sarcoidosis and one of the side effects is a reduction in white blood cells, which is what has happened to me.
