Hydroxychloroquine received an overall rating of 7 out of 10 stars from 368 reviews. See what others have said about Hydroxychloroquine, including the effectiveness, ease of use and side effects. Hydroxychloroquine does take a while to take effect. Arthritis UK gives a figure of around 12 weeks, whilst the American College of Rheumatology says, "symptoms can start to improve after 1-2 months, but it may take up to 6 months before the full benefits are felt". My own rheumy said, "3-4 months". While side effects of corticosteroids are usually to blame, there is also the possibility of ocular damage associated with long-term use of the antimalarial drugs hydroxychloroquine brand name Plaquenil® and chloroquine.

  7. Plaquenil is associated with potential side effects, one of which is particularly worrisome to people who have been prescribed the drug. Safe use helps to minimize undesirable side effects. Although Plaquenil is an older drug, it is still available and prescribed to some people who have rheumatoid arthritis or certain other rheumatic diseases.

One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio. This means that the side effects of Plaquenil are mild and infrequent compared with its potential benefits. As with any medication, allergic reactions including skin rashes and non-allergic reactions can occur. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. What are the side effects of Plaquenil? The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, skin rash or black spots when you look at things. Most side effects will go away when your body gets used to the medicine. Tell your doctor if you have these side effects. A lower dose may stop them.
