Atovaquone/proguanil, sold under the trade names Malarone among others, is a combination of two antimalarial medication atovaquone and proguanil. It is used to treat and prevent malaria, including chloroquine-resistant malaria. It is not recommended for severe or complicated malaria. It is taken by mouth. When chloroquine, doxycycline, or mefloquine is used for primary prophylaxis, primaquine is usually taken during the last 2 weeks of postexposure prophylaxis. When atovaquone-proguanil is used for prophylaxis, primaquine may be taken during the final 7 days of atovaquone-proguanil, and then for an additional 7 days. Weiss WR, Oloo AJ, Johnson A, et al. Regarding the malaria tabs, I'm very limited in what I can take and the Malarone is my least worst option. I'm allergic to mefloquine, hate doxicycline because nobody should take unnecessary antibiotics for 6 weeks at a time, and the old chloroquine and paludrine also has proguanil.
